A Humanitarian Appeal

The Popular Committee for the Relief of the People of South Sudan (PCRPSS). The people of Sudan were following with utmost sorrow and dismay the horrifying turn of events unfolding in the Republic of South Sudan for the last two years or so. The repercussions of these incidents manifested themselves in the famine that affected the lives of millions in South Sudan.

According to the reports of International Organizations, such as the World Food Program and the UNICEF, published in late February 2017, the following facts emerged:

− Around one hundred thousand citizens are facing starvation.

− Around one million are on the brink of famine.

− Around 4.9 million are in urgent need of food and the figure is expected to reach 5.5 million by summer.

The factors of famine and deteriorating security situation forced around 1.5 million to flee their home areas and seek refuge away from the war zones in fact, it is estimated that over five hundred thousand have actually reached Sudan and more are on the way according to available reports.

As a natural reaction to this humanitarian disaster, numerous Sudanese groups took initiative to work to alleviate the miseries of their South Sudanese brothers.

Accordingly and in response to the call by NCF, emerged the initiative to form this “National Committee for the Relief of the South Sudanese People” which includes a large number of Political parties, Civil Society organizations and many individuals with different political, social and religious backgrounds, who embraced the initiative as an expression of their humanitarian and brotherhood responsibility towards the South Sudanese people. The initiative is also seen as complementary to the commendable efforts being entered by the local, regional and international bodies.

The Popular Committee would like to take this opportunity to call on:

1. The Sudanese masses and business community to generously donate money and, in kind,

food, clothes and medicine and appeals to all to volunteer and engage in the work of the

Committee.

2. The Sudanese Government to meet its humanitarian obligations towards those who have

already arrived in the country through providing decent and secure accommodation,

enhancing access to relief and medical services to reach the needy and by making data

available to all organizations working in the field of humanitarian assistance.

3. The international Community and African and Arab Regional bodies to provide funds,

relief materials and logistics to secure food and medicine to the affected people. The

committee likewise calls upon them all to work towards finding quick solutions to the

sources of conflict that led to the displacement and the influx of the masses.

4. All groups, initiatives and institutions engaged in the work of assisting those people to

coordinate their efforts through exchange of data and information that ensures that relief

reaches all the targeted groups in an urgent, comprehensive, and effective manner.

The leaders in South Sudan Government and the opposition as well as the armed groups

abide with the various agreements reached through Regional mediation and halt the

hostilities the soonest.

The PCRPSS formed a coordination group headed by Ambassador Ibrahim Taha Ayoub, with

Dr. Jalaa Alazhari and Dr. Ibrahim Alamin as deputies, and representative of the six sub

committees to coordinate the implementation of the Popular Committee program.

These sub-committees are:

1. Communication and external relations committee

2. Information Committee

3. Finance committee

4. In-kind support committee

5. Health and medical committee 6. Social Affairs Committee.
